Queen or full: which bed fits a small bedroom?

Mattress sizes are fixed, but the frame adds 2 to 6 in each way, and a headboard adds depth. Plan with the frame size from the product page, not the mattress.

Mattress sizes (US)

  • Twin: 38 x 75 in
  • Full: 54 x 75 in
  • Queen: 60 x 80 in
  • King: 76 x 80 in

Space around the bed

  • 24 in on each side you get in from. 30 in feels comfortable.
  • 30 to 36 in at the foot if it's a walkway, or if a dresser faces the bed (drawers need about 18 in to open, plus you).
  • A closet or bedroom door must open fully without hitting the bed.

The rule of thumb

A queen with a frame is about 64 x 86 in. With 24 in on both sides and 30 in at the foot you need a room about 9 ft 4 in wide and 9 ft 8 in long. In a 9 x 10 ft bedroom (108 x 120 in) a queen leaves room to walk on one side only, so one side goes against the wall; a full frame is about 6 in narrower.
